LIBS Connect, Leading From The Front Line

With Rory’s background in the RAF and now working with SMEs Lincoln International Business School invited Rory to MC and facilitate the event ‘What business and military can learn from each other’.

The event was organised by the University of Lincolns International Business School, along with personal from RAF Waddington where the event took place. Guest speakers for the event were from both the business and military sectors, Howard Rudder Founder of RecruitME, Marie Harley CEO of Blue Castle and Wing Commander Richard Paine who all gave short talks about their experiences in their specific sectors to show the similarities and difference in the different sectors.

Major General (retired) Julian Free CBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor, People Services & Operations University of Lincoln and Ruchi Aggarwal, Director of Business Development at Lincoln International Business both then gave presentations about their long careers in their sectors.

Major General Julian talked about the strategic challenges of the army including his time in Iraq along with short stories from the front line whereas Ruchi talked about the VUCA model, based on leadership theories.

Over 125 people from the business and military worlds attended the event with people saying “The event was thoroughly engaging…. An excellent opportunity to learn from both civilian and military sectors.” “I really enjoyed the leadership comparisons and challenges faced by industry and academic sectors. The event was a good balance of military and civilian speakers.”
